Our new drawing and painting classes are now open to provide you (or your student) with an exciting and unique learning experience. Led by local artist and painter, Tom Relth, this class is designed for beginners and intermediate painters who are passionate about art. And, it’s for those who want to produce more original, and personal artwork. Students learn in-depth color theory, comprehensive elements of composition, and new methods of painting to strengthen their work. With improvisational techniques based on the early art history of abstraction, classes will introduce new ideas to help each student grow as an artist. Through group discussions, one-on-one guidance, brief lectures, and weekly critiques of projects, participants develop a robust art vocabulary that empowers them to conduct expert critiques and interpret concepts and ideas learned in class and via the project works. |
Our program is designed to help participants discover their true potential as artists and create strong compositions that showcase their unique, original ideas with confidence.
No prior art training is required to join our classes. We encourage all students to explore and meet the new challenges offered. Whether you’re an adult looking to enhance your skills or a high school student** with a serious interest in painting and art, we have the perfect class for you! Our program is designed to help participants discover their true potential as artists and create strong compositions that showcase their unique, original ideas with confidence. Highlights: We discuss materials, oils, non-toxics, acrylics, tools, wet and dry media, and some art history, including the art of critique vocabulary. |
Three-legged approach:
To encourage innovation and personal expression, the classes offer a distinctly different program ...with a mix of three modalities. • Art History made relevant: We discuss art movements of the early 20th Century before WWII, providing insights into the vocabulary and the concepts underpinning ideas of abstraction in the visual arts for the last 100+ years. • Painting projects: Using these underlying movements, students paint through the "isms" of the early 20th Century. Each lesson is uniquely tailored to explore distinct defining art concepts. • Critique Method: students receive individual critique on their work and learn to treat others' artwork with respect while using a simple but effective 4-step critique method. • Showcase: At the end of each 9-week term, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work at the downtown 1st Friday Exhibition. • Students are urged to take work home to complete for the next class critique, ensuring they make the most of class time to develop their skills. • Tools: Basic supply kits are available for purchase for beginners or those who just want the convenience of having tools stored at the class location. We also offer a list of recommended home-use materials. Classes are held at the indoor "open air" Marketplace complex in Downtown, a convenient location for everyone. 210 W.
